- Our brand new Effective Leadership Skills for Sports Performance – QQI Level 6 award is designed to equip the learners with the Knowledge and Skills for providing leadership to a sports team/individual. The module will introduce learners to the principal theories of Leadership and how to successfully implement the skills and qualities associated with successful leadership, for the overall improvement of the athletes’ experience & performance.
- What QQI award do I receive? On successful completion of this module you will gain a QQI Level 6 component Certificate.

- How is it delivered?This programme combines both synchronous online tutorials and interactive online learning via our eLearning platform Moodle. You will be expected to attend 8 x 1-hour weekly workshops with an additional 4 weeks dedicated to assessment.

Description
This brand new online QQI Level 6 Effective Leadership Skills for Sports Performance course will introduce learners to the principal theories of leadership and how to these theories can be understood in a real-world context (via practical examples, shared experiences and case studies) with the aim of improving levels of participation, performance and experience for their athletes and teams.
On successful completion of the programme learners will be confident in implementing effective leadership skills to a sporting team/individual for the overall improvement of performance in a range of sporting contexts.
Learners from a range of sporting backgrounds are encouraged to participate by way of facilitating collaborative learning and peer to peer engagement through shared experiences.
On completion of this programme, the learner will be able to:
- Evaluate key leaderships theories and principles that can be applied to a range of a sporting contexts.
- Implement the skills, qualities and responsibilities associated with successful sports leadership.
- Examine the role of the sports team in the coaching process and understand how to create a positive environment while applying professional and ethical standards.
- Demonstrate good practice in managing and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders with the aim of maximising engagement and enjoyment in sport.
Please Note: This Level 6 component award will introduce the learner to key theories which are relevant to Leadership which will support their coaching roles. Learners are advised that this is not a coaching programme and successful learners do not receive a coaching qualification on completion. Learners wishing to gain a certified coaching qualification may do so with the relevant National Governing Body.

Module & Programme Structures:
Over the duration of this QQI Level 6 Effective Leadership Skills for Sports Performance module you will cover the following topics:
Unit 1: Understanding Leadership Theories and Styles and implementing them into your own practice:
- Define Leadership.
- Key styles of leadership theory: Autocratic, Democratic, Laissez Faire.
- Transformation v Transactional.
- The Psychology of Leadership (Personality, Behavior, Contingency, Power & Influence).
- Developing your own definition of leadership based on common leadership theories.
- Leadership themes in the context of sport.
- Tools you can use to become (more) effective leaders.
- Developing your own leadership styles and values based on the leadership theories.
- How leadership theories look in practice in the sporting environment both within individual and team sports.
Unit 2: The Skills, Qualities and Traits for successful leadership:
- Key traits and characteristics and how to apply these to your sporting environments (Including communication. Empathy, Humility, Self-awareness, Trust etc).
- Profile yourself against these characteristics and traits.
- How these traits can enhance an athlete’s experience.
- Gender Stereotypes and leadership styles. The differences between the male and female leader in sport.
- How to develop the key traits and apply where necessary.
Unit 3: Key communication principles for maximizing the athlete’s performance:
- Verbal / Non-verbal communication.
- The key principles of Listening.
- Communicating with male and female athletes.
- Problem solving skills (Analyse, Plan, Implement, Evaluate).
- How effective leaders utilise communication.
Unit 4: Professional practice that consider key stakeholders, sporting contexts and codes:
- Organisational Structures & Hierarchies.
- Knowing and actioning appropriate memberships for your associated codes.
- Adherence to ethical guidelines for specific codes and general practice.
- Understanding your own style while still employing professional practice.
Unit 5: Development of a positive learning environment and understanding behaviour management strategies relevant to the development needs and demands of the sport:
- Assessing the safety of environment and needs of athletes.
- Understanding the difference between Group dynamics v individual sports and identifying whether anything needs to change or adapt.
- Are their Gender differences in how you set the environment, communicate and coach / lead.
Unit 6: Planning, Implementing, and reviewing sessions to encourage and measure development and performance gains:
- The key principles to planning a session for the athletes (considering the goals of the session, number of participants, gender and age).
- Implementing effective sessions.
- Reviewing the sessions to ensure goals are achieved and applying learning to new plans.
- How to measure effectiveness of sessions and athletic development.
Unit 7: Stakeholder involvement and promoting a positive relationship with the athlete/team:
- Understanding the relationships and the different role of stakeholders.
- Multidisciplinary Approach with the wider support team
- C-A-P Triangle (Coach-athlete-parent)
- Managing relationships and conflict.
Unit 8: The relationship between psychology and leadership:
- How personality and motivation and can impact the leader/coach and athlete relationships.
- Understanding how psychology and positive leadership impacts performance.
- Identifying and utilising psychological tools to enhance the athletes performance. (I.e., goal setting, Emotional control and purposeful practice).
Assessment Strategies:
The overall summative assessment strategy centres around a continuous assessment approach which emphasises the link between theory and practice. Learners will undertake three assessments across the programme.
Over the duration of the programme, learners will have the opportunity to interact with online technologies and to reflect on the application of theoretical knowledge and how this relates to practice. Learners will undertake each of the following assessments across the programme;
- Online Discussion Forum
- PowerPoint Presentation
- Case Study.
Additionally, learners will also engage with a range on online activities which contributes to the formative assessment approach across the programme. Lecturers will provide timely feedback through live online lectures and tutorials as well as through ongoing communications.
Learners may also avail of the opportunity of submitting a draft assessment that is also intended as another outlet for formative assessment and feedback.
Accreditation
- Following successful completion, you will receive a QQI Level 6 Sports Leadership – Special Purpose Award (30 Credits). This is recognised on the basis of learners entering onto the programme having already completed the QQI Level 6 Sports Psychology minor award (15 credits), or equivalent.
- QQI (Quality & Qualifications Ireland) is the national awarding body for further education and training in Ireland. Delivery Format
How does our online blended learning work?
This QQI Level 6 Effective Leadership Skills for Sports Performance (Minor Award) is a blended learning programme using a combination of class based tutorials and other suitable online teaching and learning activities.
Over the duration of this programme all learners will engage in approx. 13 hours of study each week which considers a mix of directed and independent study.
Suitable teaching methods will compromise a range of teaching and learning activities that are intended for the direct teaching of core topics, to support the learning process and to assist in the understanding of the content while also encouraging peer to peer engagement and interactions. These methods will be guided and supported through online lectures, tutorials, discussions, collaborative and independent learning.
Additionally, learners will engage in a series of online activities which will include pre-recorded video content, written content, discussion forums, presentations, uploaded readings, quizzes and exercises, all of which will all be hosted in the colleges eLearning system.
Entry Requirements
Entry Requirements / Prerequisites:
The pre-requisites for entry will consider each of the following:
- Mandatory: QQI Level 6 certificate in Sports Psychology or equivalent. Where a learner has not completed a formal qualification, arrangements for prior learning will be considered to assess the required level of knowledge and skill to access the programme.
- Learners must be a based in Ireland and hold an Irish or UK PPS number.
- Learning Effort: Learners should be aware that this 15-credit component requires a learning effort of 150 hours (1 credit=10 hours) so that they can achieve the programme outcomes. This includes time for undertaking both directed and self-directed teaching activities.
- As the programme aims to promote independent study skills, learners must be capable of studying on their own initiate, demonstrating their ability to plan and manage their own individual study schedules.
- English Language Requirement: learners entering programmes leading to awards at Level 6 are expected to be able to: fluently read, draft, prepare and understand complex information, including quantitative information, that is personally relevant and reflecting a broad knowledge base. Any applicant whose first language is not English may also be required to demonstrate their level of English proficiency by completion of an appropriate recognised test such as IELTS (or equivalent) achieving a score of 6.5 or higher.
- Digital Literacy: learners undertaking this programme must have a basic working knowledge of computers and their associated applications that will enable them to successfully participate in a blended learning programme. Learners must have access to the necessary equipment which will enable them to successfully participate in the online activities i.e., computer, broadband, email, recording equipment necessary for some skills demonstration tasks, and where applicable any other specialised software/equipment.
